p

The symbol pp usually denotes a momentum value, momentum variable, or momentum eigenvalue. The corresponding operator is written p^\hat p in one dimension or p^\hat{\mathbf p} in vector notation.

In the position representation,

p^=−iℏddx\hat p = -i\hbar\frac{d}{dx}

in one dimension, with domains and boundary conditions understood. For a plane wave,

p=ℏk.p=\hbar k.

For a nonrelativistic free particle,

E=p22m.E=\frac{p^2}{2m}.

pp has units of momentum, such as mass times velocity. In SI units this is kg m s−1\mathrm{kg\,m\,s^{-1}}.

  • pp as probability, especially in statistical notation such as pip_i.
  • pp as pressure in thermodynamic contexts.
  • pp as an atomic orbital label, as in pp orbitals.
  • p^\hat p as an operator versus pp as an eigenvalue or integration variable.
