h

The symbol hh denotes the Planck constant. The reduced Planck constant is

ℏ=h2π,h=2πℏ.\hbar=\frac{h}{2\pi}, \qquad h=2\pi\hbar.

This site usually writes formulas using ℏ\hbar rather than hh when angular frequency, commutators, or Schrödinger evolution are involved. The symbol hh appears naturally with ordinary frequency ν\nu:

E=hν.E=h\nu.

For angular frequency ω=2πν\omega=2\pi\nu,

E=ℏω.E=\hbar\omega.

hh has units of action, equivalently energy times time or angular momentum.

  • hh as a numerical step size in finite-difference or numerical methods.
  • hh as height or a generic small perturbation.
  • hμνh_{\mu\nu} as a metric perturbation in field-theory contexts.
